VOICES FOR CHANGE, BRISBANE
Lived Experience Speakers - Mental Health Recovery
My earlier years started in Logan City and after completing my senior, I studied my passion of fitness in the early nineties. By the age of 21 I had already become a young father and was delivering personal training services, and later become a freelance group exercise instructor across Logan and Brisbane fitness centres.
After a marriage separation and due to work stress I was hospitalised with a mental health concern at 29 years of age. Following this was several years of struggles, relapses and experiences of social isolation, being unable to work for much of this time due to my mental health. After much loss, my real turning points had really begun when I started supporting other people in hospital and then later connecting with other of people in the community having similar experiences.
Since 2007, I have been working to provide support to others in helping them to make new meaning from their experiences. I passionately believe in our shared community responsibilities in supporting each other's mental health and wellbeing. My other interests include fitness, poetry, photography and reading. I have a soft, honest and friendly presentation style and am comfortable presenting speeches, reciting my poetry, facilitating group discussions, and participating in question and answer sessions.
Key topics Ian can talk to: psychosis, relationships, being a parent, men's health, social isolation, experiences as an inpatient.
